FLOOD CONTROL (I. R. G. 96)
INTRODUCTORY:-
A remarkable transformation has been witnessed in the
rainfall map of Gujarat for the last two decades. Flood problem is
created every year in minor and major rivers. These were flood in
1968, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1988, 1990, 1994, 1997 and 1998. Flood cursed
damage to life and property, standing crops, and problems like water
logging land erosion etc. were created.
Keeping in view previous years’ experiences, Narmada
and Water Resources Department every year published flood memorandum
for flood forecasting and flood warning. Accordingly, flood memorandum
for the year 1999 was published in the year 1999, wherein keeping in
view probable flood condition wireless sets were instructed on
different dams and maximum security measures were taken. During
currant monsoon of the year 1998, in all 359 wireless sets were used
in the state for flood control. But to bridle flood, along with flood
control steps, flood-checking steps are required on permanent basis.
Taking into consideration this point, Shri Jaishukhlal Hathi committee
was formed on the national basis. This committee has suggested 207
recommendations in comprehensive forms. The master plan prepared for
protection against flood has been prepared after modification in the
perspective of Hathi Committee’s recommendations.
In South Gujarat, problem of coastal erosion due to
seed has been arisen and hence protective steps have also been
included in the master plan. In this revised master plan of Rs. 204.46
crore, provision has been made against flood in following all major
and minor rivers.
