Scheme of Prevention of Salinity Irrigation (IRG-100 and 1001)
Introductory :-
Due to increased requirement of water in coastal areas of
Saurashtra and erratic rains, use of underground water resources has
gave up and on account of that drawing of under ground water has
also increased speed in underground water of the interior areas of
this area. Thus the fertility of the land of this area has decreased
and water of well have turned saltish.
In view of the above serious condition,
the
government has get up a high level committee at the end of the year
1976. The committee toured and studied the 170 k.m. area of una
Madhorpur in the coastal areas of Saurashtra and submitted a Report
to the Government suggesting various steps and the estimated cost of
Rs. 44 crore for prevention of Salinity in the areas, which the
government has accepted in principle the said report works such
as coustruction of tidal regulators-7, Bandhare-10, check dams-75,
relearning of ponds-7 nos, reservoirs-4 nos, expensing canals of the
longest of 60 kms. State barricades in longest 76 kms. Aftorestation
in 50,000 hectare areas etc were suggested.
Except static barricades, the Govt. administratively
approved the scheme costing & Rs. 65:87 crore in April 1980 and the
said scheme was submitted for approval of World Bank for grant
assistance for which the world bank had approved and assistant of Rs.
29.70 crore in which the work of tidal regulators. Bandhara-10,
Checkdams 150 to 200, Reservoirs and afforestation in 10,000 hectare
and nala plugging in 10,000 were covered.
The works of four tidal regulators at Vasoj, Vadodara,
Zale, Meghal, Mul Dwarka in total out of world bank aid for Una
Madhevpur areas have been completed and the work of Medha creek
tidal regulator has also been completed. The works of twenties
Bandharas out of the Bandharas saluted in Una Madhevpura area have
been completed. The works of recharging of wells and 5 recharging of
boards and 160 check dams have been completed. Beside this, the works
of afforestation in 5,867 hectare and 4,487 nala plugging have been
completed and the works of Vrujmi and Not reservoir have been
completed and the work & Somnath cause way instead of Somnath
Bandhara has been completed. The latest position of the works

Various steps were suggested at the estimated cost & Rs. 169
crore by the High Level Committee-2 appointed for prevention of
ingress of salinity in costal areas of 180 Kms & Una-Bhavnagar. The
report was submitted to the Govt. in April 1983. Which was accepted
by the Govt. in principle in April-84.
Moreover, a report suggesting various steps costing
Rs. 370 crore by the High Level Committee for the area of 425 Kms of
Madhavpur-Malia was submitted to the Govt. in 1984 which is accepted
by the Govt. in principle in September'92.
Also a report suggesting various steps at the cost of
Rs. 186 crore by the High Level Committee-2 appointed for the study
& coastal areas of 360 Kms. of Kachchha for Lakhpat in Malia was
submitted to the Govt. in November 1985. The works of Kachchha are
under Kachchha irrigation circle, Bhuj. (Kuchchha), whereas for the
works of saurastra areas, the circle and 7 Departments are engaged.

Until the report submitted by the High Level
Committee-2 is implemented, in view of the representations made by
representatives & the people. The Govt. has administratively
approved in all 375 check dams in the coastal areas of Bhavnagar to
Una as well as Madhavpur to Malia and the works of 90 check dams are
in progress. The works of 299 Check dams in all in this area have
been completed. Moreover the work of Medha creck tidal regulator
near Porbandar has been completed.
The regular scrutiny of under ground water in coastal
areas of Una Madhavpur till date has revealed that the salinity
marking line in the coastal areas of chorvad and Una is will drawing
and dwindling and thus, the quality of under ground water in about
23018 hectares area is improving either fully or partially.
An expenditure of Rs. 232 crore has been made upto
September, 1999, for the works Suggested by the High Level
Committee-2 and an amount of Rs. 32.91 Crore has been reimbursed by
