Scheme of Prevention of Salinity Irrigation (IRG-100 and 1001)

Introductory :-

Due to increased requirement of water in coastal areas of Saurashtra and erratic rains, use of underground water resources has gave up and on account of that drawing of under ground water has also increased speed in underground water of the interior areas of this area. Thus the fertility of the land of this area has decreased and water of well have turned saltish.

            In view of the above serious condition, the government has get up a high level committee at the end of the year 1976. The committee toured and studied the 170 k.m. area of una Madhorpur in the coastal areas of Saurashtra and submitted a Report to the Government suggesting various steps and the estimated cost of Rs. 44 crore for prevention of Salinity in the areas, which the government has accepted in principle  the said report works such as coustruction of tidal regulators-7, Bandhare-10, check dams-75, relearning of ponds-7 nos, reservoirs-4 nos, expensing canals of the longest of 60 kms. State barricades in longest 76 kms. Aftorestation in 50,000 hectare areas etc were suggested.

            Except static barricades, the Govt. administratively approved the scheme costing & Rs. 65:87 crore in April 1980 and the said scheme was submitted for approval of World Bank for grant assistance for which the world bank had approved and assistant of Rs. 29.70 crore in which the work of tidal regulators. Bandhara-10, Checkdams 150 to 200, Reservoirs and afforestation in 10,000 hectare and nala plugging in 10,000 were covered.

            The works of four tidal regulators at Vasoj, Vadodara, Zale, Meghal, Mul Dwarka in total out of world bank aid for Una Madhevpur areas have been completed and the work of Medha creek tidal regulator has also been completed. The works of twenties Bandharas out of the Bandharas saluted in Una Madhevpura area have been completed. The works of recharging of wells and 5 recharging of boards and 160 check dams have been completed. Beside this, the works of afforestation in 5,867 hectare and 4,487 nala plugging have been completed and the works of Vrujmi and Not reservoir have been completed and the work & Somnath cause way instead of Somnath Bandhara has been completed. The latest position of the works carried out as per the recommendation of High Level Committe-1 is given below :

Various steps were suggested at the estimated cost & Rs. 169 crore by the High Level Committee-2 appointed for prevention of ingress of salinity in costal areas of 180 Kms & Una-Bhavnagar. The report was submitted to the Govt. in April 1983. Which was accepted by the Govt. in principle in April-84.

            Moreover, a report suggesting various steps costing Rs. 370 crore by the High Level Committee for the area of 425 Kms of Madhavpur-Malia was submitted to the Govt. in 1984 which is accepted by the Govt. in principle in September'92.

            Also a report suggesting various steps at the cost of Rs. 186 crore by the High Level Committee-2 appointed for the study & coastal areas of 360 Kms. of Kachchha for Lakhpat in Malia was submitted to the Govt. in November 1985. The works of Kachchha are under Kachchha irrigation circle, Bhuj. (Kuchchha), whereas for the works of saurastra areas, the circle and 7 Departments are engaged.

            The main works under the area recommended by High Level Committee-2 are as under :

            Until the report submitted by the High Level Committee-2 is implemented, in view of the representations made by representatives & the people. The Govt. has administratively approved in all 375 check dams in the coastal areas of Bhavnagar to Una as well as Madhavpur to Malia and the works of 90 check dams are in progress. The works of 299 Check dams in all in this area have been completed. Moreover the work of Medha creck tidal regulator near Porbandar has been completed.

            The regular scrutiny of under ground water in coastal areas of Una Madhavpur till date has revealed that the salinity marking line in the coastal areas of chorvad and Una is will drawing and dwindling and thus, the quality of under ground water in about 23018 hectares area is improving either fully or partially. 

            An expenditure of Rs. 232 crore has been made upto September, 1999, for the works Suggested by the High Level Committee-2 and an amount of Rs. 32.91 Crore has been reimbursed by the world bank. Out of the above Schemes, Lift irrigation potential for the 28357 hectares has been generated up till now.
