Introductory:-

             Alongwith the increase of irrigation facility, some problems are also created problem of water disposal in command area is related to the increase of consumption of irrigation. Water disposal problem is a problem of water logging. Shallow soil till depth in command area results in consumption of more irrigation water and water logging. Because of the formation and nature of this land, total quantity of irrigated water does not get absorbed. This kind of water logging causes issues like decomposition, insects epidemic and of crop like. Due to increase in ground water table and salinity in the land, disposal of water has become necessary.

            Along with the rise of irrigation in Mahi command area and Tapi command area, water disposal problem has worn a gigantic form Hence, time bound planning has been made and water logging problem in these two areas is being disposal off. For this task master plan of Rs. 29.95 crore was sanctioned. These division do the works of O.F.D. beside sub-divisions. In Tapi area, one land survey division three water disposal division and twelve sub-divisions are working. For the water disposal works of Tapi area master plan of Rs. 10.49 crore was sanctioned, against which revised master plan has been sanctioned, which is to the tune of Rs. 3895 lakh. In this area, saline area is 16,558 hectare. For this following works are included.

By the end of 1997-98, channels of 7842 k.m. length were dug and construction work on 4919 rivulets was completed.

            Due to this water disposal master plan, in 1997- in 10520 hectare command area of Ukai, underground water table was registered in 1-5 meter depth.

            For water disposal works in Mahi command area, master plan of Rs. 19.46 crore was sanctioned, against which revised master plan of Rs. 30.94 has been sanctioned. Due to heavy rainfall in the Mahi command area it has become necessary to increase flow capacity of main canals and sub canals. Now revised drainage master plan of Rs. 8021 lakh is under approval of the government and due to this water disposal master plan ground water was registered in 2590 hectare land in the Mahi area which was only 360 hectare in 1993.

It has been planned to complete remaining works of main canal and sub canals and other new works by the year 2007 in the 10th Five Year Plan. For this, total Rs. 3935 lakh have been expended. Besides, the Government of Gujarat had appointed a committee for water logging disposal in the World Bank aided irrigation schemes, which had recommended to take steps in the following five schemes in 16260 hectare area. (1) Panam (2) Venu-2 (3) Dantiwada (4) Fatewadi (5) Shetrungi. Out of this work has been done in 481 hectare in Panam scheme.

In other parts of the state water logging problem is due to rainy water.

To take this problem, channel scheme is in force. Panchagat Irrigation Circles look after the schemes of estimated cost below Rs. 15 lakh whereas respective circle under the state Government looks after the scheme of estimated cost of more tan 15 lakh.
