Sarda Sarovar (n) Project I.R.G. No.1
Introductory
Sardar Sarovar Project is an Inter-State, multipurpose joint venture of four
states – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in India with a
terminal major dam on river Narmada in Gujarat. It is one of the largest water
resources development projects in India and possibly in the world.
The basin area of the river Narmada is 97410 sq kms. The utilisation of Narmada
River basin to day is hardly about 10%. The plan for harnessing the river for
irrigation and power generation in the Narmada basin was initiated in 1946 when
this project was identified. After the completion of investigation, the proposed
dam at Gora was selected. The late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid
the foundation stone on 5th April 1961. Thereafter, possibility of raising the
height of the dam for optimum utilisation of water was considered. However, as
no agreement could be arrived at, the Government of India constituted Dispute
Tribunal (NWDT) in 1969, under the Inter State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal (NWDT) gave its final decision in 1979 after
carrying out in-depth study of planning of all projects on Narmada river valley
and its relative aspects of Rehabilitation and Environment. A total of 30 major,
135 medium and 3000 minor dams are to be constructed for development of Narmada
river valley. Out of 30 major dams, only one major project, Sardar Sarovar, with
a terminal dam at Kevadia Colony is under construction in Gujarat.
