- Based on success stories and the scientific knowledge and management plans following the National Program on Aquifer Mapping and Management (NAQUIM) results,
- ATAL JAL proposes to start a program on sustainable groundwater management in select water-stressed areas of Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka,, Maharashtra, , Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
- The estimated cost of the scheme is INR 6,000 crore, of which INR 3,000 crore will be in the form of a loan by the World Bank and INR 3,000 crore as matching contribution from the Government of India (GoI).
- The scheme will be a Central Sector Scheme with funds going to the states as grants-in-aid.
- The World Bank financing will be done under a new lending instrument, that is, Program for Results (PforR), wherein funds under the scheme will be disbursed from the World Bank to the GoI based on achievement of pre-agreed results.
